The New Challenges Of Career Development for the 21st Century

From the 70s to the 90s, career paths have been predictable and relatively stable. Plenty of people profited from this stable and easy-to-manage success ladder, until things went sour in 2008 with real estate properties losing ground and plenty of businesses losing their people to the bubble.

Diversity, a well-rounded skillset and applied trade knowledge in different tasks are definitely the keys to success. Knowledge diversity is highly important. A creative director isn’t just a creative director. He or she must have at least some small knowledge about logistics and possibly accounting for budgeting purposes.

Career paths today have leaner structures and involve an endless number of changes. A desk job isn’t just a desk job any longer. Employers are required to answer their employee’s biggest trouble, which is identifying the purpose of their task.

Career paths also change because millennials are more critical about their employer’s ideas, especially for work value interpretation and creating a new niche for their talents and skillsets. Meanwhile, despite being more critical, millennials are the ones most likely to succeed in their careers while new mergers, acquisitions, financial crises and re-structuring may pillage the foundations of both the Generation X and Baby Boomer employees.

For any employee or career-focused employee, the next best thing is to always have a sense of curiosity and thirst for learning fast. An endeavour to have continuous improvement is highly important.
